Welcome to Lighthouse Baptist Church of San Antonio, Texas |
| Our Church History |
In July of 1991, several families began meeting in homes with a desire to establish a New Testament, Independent Baptist Church. Three months later, the church began to meet in an upstairs area of Terrell Hills Plaza shopping center. The site was prepared for use and then a search for a pastor was initiated, with C. Harold McMurry leading the congregation.
One of the church families had previously been in Torrejon Baptist Church in Torrejon, Spain, pastored by Gary Craft. At that time, Pastor Craft had moved to Germany and was pastoring an off-post military church. Due to the draw-down of the military and the base closures in Germany, his ministry there was coming to a close. At this time, Lighthouse Baptist Church asked Bro. Craft to candidate for it's pulpit. He was home on furlough in late 1991 and candidated at that time. The church voted 100% to call him as pastor in January 1992. He was sent out by First Baptist Church of Walkerton, Ind., with the intent of organizing a church in San Antonio. He assumed the pulpit of Lighthouse Baptist Church on April 10, 1992, after moving back from Germany. With a full-time pastor on board, Lighthouse Baptist Church was formerly organized on May 31, 1992, with 38 charter members.
By Spring 1994, the shopping center location had become too small to handle the growing attendance, so we began to find a permanent building.
Formerly used by Landmark Baptist Church, the new building at 10400 Broadway, where we are still located today, was extensively renovated and move-in was accomplished in October 1994.
On Oct. 11, 1998, Bro. Craft resigned as our pastor. We again formed a
pastor search committee. While the church was searching for a pastor, Bro.
C. Harold McMurry once again lead the congregation, and the church still
kept growing. In April 1999, Bro. Don Ohm from Longmont, Colo., candidated.
On April 18, 1999, the church voted 100% to call him as pastor, and he
accepted.
